EDIT!
General Introduction reveals two points. One is situation in Paris – the intellectual capital in mid 17th century. The philosophical school in Paris was growing since the 13th century when Aristotelian corpus was translated from Greek and Arabic and was made compatible to the Christian doctrine. This gave impetus to the scholastics.
ReplyDeleteHowever, in mid seventeenth century Paris philosophical revolution was taking place. New philosophy of science attacked scholastics. Old problems solved in the scholastic philosophy were raised again in the world of atoms, and corpuscules. The issues for debate were: the structure of the universe, the place of human soul, God‘s purpose and relation to the universe.
Though some setbacks for the new philosophy were achieved by scholastic opposition, the new mechanistic ways of thinking were gaining their way in philosophy.
This situation in Paris encouraged many young and modestly published philosophers such as Leibniz to create their most influential works..
This anthology attempts to secure that „intellectual ferment“ and also makes the works written in that historic period more accessible to modern readers, which is point two covered in the introduction. The anthology includes some full texts such as Descarte‘s Mediation, Leibniz‘s Dicourse and Monadology, and others.English texts were modernised and open punctuation was chosen.
This anthology is designed for one quarter course often referred to as „The Rationalists“.
XVIth century was the age, than cartisians raises the problems of understanding 'what is what', with the basis of new mechanistic world. Leibniz commited as one of greatest modern philosophy founder in theese age. His texts or books as "Discourse" or "Monadology" are included in studies of XXI th century as modern philosophy birth.
ReplyDeleteThe authors in general introdution writes that Aristotilian philosophy had dominated in Europe since 13th century. In mid 17th creates a new philosophical doctrine which varies from the scholastic., but catholic church condemned or puts representatives of new philosophical flow works on the Index of Prohibited Books. The new doctrine was talking about the structure of universe, its finite or infinite, and conception of space and time. Also, old isues, such as the soul location, its immorality, God's purpose in the creation of universe and his relation to it, was keenly debated.
